The nearest beach to Malaga city center is La Malagueta - it is fine for a day's sunbathing, although quieter and prettier beaches can be found further east. If you go to the west, the first town you meet is Torremolinos, about 12 kilometers from Malaga.
Torremolinos was the first place on Costa del Sol that was developed into a center for tourism in the early 1960s. Still today it is a popular destination, with good beaches, many hotels and restaurants, and a night life that attracts many people. Just to the west of Torremolinos, within walking distance, is La Carihuela, a former fishing village, but today a very popular place to go to because of the beach and the restaurants, some of the best seafood restaurants are found in La Carihuela.
A little bit further to the west, but still within walking distance from Torremolinos, is Puerto Marina, a marina with man made islands and lots of small bays. There are many restaurants, bars and clubs in the Puerto Marina, and after midnight it is especially popular with the younger visitors.
Further down the coast you will get to other tourist centers, with beautiful beaches, like Benalmadena, Fuengirola, and the more exclusive seaside resort, Marbella together with Puerto Banus, known for the luxurious yachts, restaurants, shops and nightlife.
