San Sebastian, officially known as Donostia-San Sebastian, is a stylish city located in the north of the Basque Country, on the southern coast of the Bay of Biscay, and just 20 kilometers from the French border. Its population is around 185,000, and its metropolitan area's population around 400,000. San Sebastian's picturesque coastline makes it a popular beach resort for the wealthy Spaniards who escape the owerpowering heat of the interior during the summer months.
The city spreads around the famous La Concha beach which is packed in July and August with a huge number of visitors. The other beaches are Playa de Ondarreta to the west and Play de la Zurriola to the east. Inland there are beautiful green mountain landscapes.
In the oldest part of San Sebastian, the churches of San Vicente and Santa María del Coro, are worth a visit. An old Dominican convent is nowadays the San Telmo Museum, whose archaeological and ethnographic collections, together with its paintings also are worth a visit. The busy streets of the old town lead you to Plaza de la Constitucíon. Among its many balconies - numbered and painted white, betraying its origin as a bullring, stands the old Neoclassical City Hall, converted into the Municipal Library.
Some of the most renowned restaurants in Spain are in San Sebastian, and you will find more Michelin star restaurants in San Sebastian than in any other city in Spain. You can also sample some excellent tapas in the many restaurants in the old quarter, where you simply take a plate from the barman and select whatever you fancy from the vast selection of freshly prepared dishes which are laid out on the bar.
